General provisions

The course, which is a separate course, can be used as part of a Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science.

This course substitute and corresponds to the 3FN008.

The contents partly overlap with compulsory courses within the Pharmacy Programme and Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy Programme. Therefore it cannot be included as an elective course within any of these two programmes.

Entry requirements

One of the following is required: (1) A Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science, 120 credits, (2) 60 credits in chemistry or biology, (3) four semesters of studies in the Medicine programme, (4) other education according to special evaluation.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course the student should:

\x{2022} be able to account for the subject pharmacognosy, its contents and foci

\x{2022} be able to explain the principles of the biosynthesis of plants

\x{2022} be able to from biosynthesis and chemical structure divide and characterise bioactive natural products, especially from plants

\x{2022} be able to evaluate scientific pharmacognostic information from different sources, including scientific journals, historical sources, Internet and company information

Content

The course includes a series of reading seminars in pharmacognosy integrated with the literature course, and writing an independent literature based scientific essay.

In this course the student obtains further and specific training to:

\x{2022} compile and present information in the form of an essay

\x{2022} from the course literature prepare and answer seminar questions in writing

Instruction

The course is given in the form of a web-based distance course as half-time studies. The teaching is communicated in the form of seminar assignments and during the literature study through individual supervision of each student.

Compulsory parts include: Participation in reading seminars including implementation and written presentation of assigned questions and literature study.

Assessment

For approved examination, it is required that the student has completed compulsory parts (examination code) of the course.

Finishing of not accomplished compulsory parts can take place at the earliest the next time the course is given and then in case of a vacancy.
