Entry requirements

45 credits in finished courses from the first year within the programme and 35 credits in finished courses from the second year within the programme and no less than 120 credits in finished courses in total of which 75 credits within the main field of biomedicine also Diseases - Clinical Survey (3ME069) or course with equal syllabus.

Learning outcomes

The undergraduate thesis project should provide the student with knowledge of how to seek scientific facts and how to plan, carry out and present scientific work as well as theoretical and practical specialisation within a biomedical subject area.

Upon completion of the course the student is expected to:

Knowledge and understanding

  • Show basic knowledge on how to pursue scientic fact.
  • Show basic knowledge on planning and performance of a scientific work.
  • Show basic knowledge on analysis of scientific data.
  • Show basic knowledge on how to present scientific work.
  • Theoretical and practical professional specialisation within a biomedical discipline including understanding of the current research questions.

Skill and abilities

  • Be able to search scientific literature
  • Be able to summaries scientific literature
  • Be able to discuss scientific data related to the question at hand
  • Be able to present scientific data and conclusions in written and oral form addressed to different groups.

  • Be able to understand and analyse ethical issues in an adequate manner related to the scientific work

Content

The undergraduate thesis project within the field of biomedical research is an individual study that must include hypothesis testing that will substantiate new data.

The undergraduate thesis project includes search, studies and summary of scientific literature, practical work in close relation to ongoing biomedical research, compilation and critical analysis of the results, and oral and written presentation.

The undergraduate thesis project is mastered under individual supervision. The supervision includes how to perform a scientific study and how to orally and in writing present gathered data in good scientific manor. The supervisor must have documented scientific experience.

A continuous evaluation of the course design is ongoing and may result in some changes in the structure and to some degree content of the ourse.

Instruction

The studies take place under individual supervision and include literature studies, seminar exercises and practical work.

Assessment

The undergraduate thesis project should be presented in an individually written essay that forms the basis for examination. It should be presented orally for other students, with a critical response presented by another student, and be presented at a seminar in the presence of experts. The student should also write a popular summary of the project aimed at laymen.
