Entry requirements

40 credits within the Master's Programme in Molecular Biotechnology Engineering, including Basic Chemistry, Cell Biology and Introductory Organic Chemistry.

Learning outcomes

In this course, the student receives both theoretical and practical skills in biotechnological methods. After the course, the student should be able to

  • isolate, identify and characterize biomolecules, with focus on proteins.
  • plan and perform a practical project in group.
  • critically evaluate the experimental results, discuss the pros and cons of different methods and be able to propose and develop alternative methods.

Content

Strategies and methods for the isolation and characterization of biomolecules (chromatography, electrophoresis, spectroscopy, etc.). Preparation of recombinant proteins. Tailor-made proteins. Qualitative and quantitative studies of biomolecular interactions and mechanisms, structure-function relationships, enzyme kinetics. Membrane Biochemistry. The laboratory work is carried out in the form of realistic projects in smaller groups where basic methods of expression, separation and analysis are included. The project also includes research planning, information retrieval, compilation and evaluation of the results obtained.

Instruction

Lectures and laboratory work

Assessment

Written examination at the end of the course (3 credits). Exercises and laboratory work (2 credits). The final grade corresponds to a weighted average of the results of the written test and the results of the exercises / laboratory work.

Other directives

The course cannot be included higher education qualification together with 1KB412 Methods in Biotechnology.
