Entry requirements

120 credits of which 90 credits should be in the main area of studies natural sciences or technology including the course Meteorology, hydrology and environmental measurement techniques 15 credits.

Learning outcomes

After the completion of the course, the student should be able to

  • analyse data for different types of air pollutants (gases, particles, noise and light) and describe their variation in space and time
  • account for different techniques that is used to decrease the amount of pollutants
  • understand the chemical transformation of pollutants in the atmosphere
  • describe the processes which influence noise propagation in the atmosphere and conduct simple calculations on noise propagation
  • apply prior knowledge on processes in the atmospheric boundary layer on dispersion calculations of pollutants in the atmosphere
  • have knowledge of current environmental qualitystandards and environmental goals for air pollution in Sweden

Content

The course aims to give the students an overview of the air pollutant issue (gases, particles, smell, noise and light). The main focus will be on chemical and noise related aspects in the air pollutant issue.

Chemical transformation of gases in the atmosphere and the dispersion of pollution at the local and global scale (processes and dispersion calculations). Techniques for reducing the amount of pollutants in gas phase and as particulate matter. Existing environmental qualitystandards and environmental goals for air pollution s.

Sound propagation in the atmosphere outdoors (basic acoustics), influence from weather (refraction, absorption, distribution and ground damping) and how sound levels vary throughout the day / year. The student will also gain knowledge of methods and models used today in the consultant business.

Instruction

Lectures, calculation exercises, practical assignments, home assignment, seminars and study visits

Assessment

Written examen (3 credits), home- and practical assignments (3 credits), active participation in mandatory study visits and seminars ( 3 credits) and oral presentations (1 credit).
