Learning outcomes

After completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • Describe and understand theories and concepts of Sustainable Development and the emergence and diffusion of these concepts in various organisational and business contexts
  • Be able to analyse and problematise claims about the causal relations between economic development and environmental and social development
  • Describe how different organisational conditions may influence implementation of sustainability strategies in organisations.
  • Assess the outcome of control systems designed to enhance realization of sustainability strategies in organisations.

Content

Organisational goals on sustainability are very much influenced by e.g. the U.N. sustainable

development goals. As these goals address the global community they by nature are wide and

overarching. Therefore organisations may face several challenges when they try to interpret

and malve such goals a part of their daily operations. This course is about how organisations

may manage these challenges. In it we therefore study fundamentals of sustainability and

organisational identities and contexts. Furthermore how organisations may interpret global

sustainability goals and based on them develop organisational sustainability goals. We also

study and problematise how organisations do when they try to develop and implement

sustainability strategies and management control systems that are supposed to contribute to

fulfilment of organisational and global sustainability goals.

Instruction

In working towards the learning objectives, a combination of lectures and seminars will be

held. Lectures introduce theoretical perspectives on sustainability, organisations and

management control systems. The seminars comprise group discussions that analyse course

literature and case descriptions.

Just like the teachers, students are always expected to be prepared for the lectures and take

responsibility for the co-creation of a generative learning processto unfold. At the same

time, important learning will talke place outside the lecture hall. That is why there is an

emphasis on the hands-on experience of reading and writing (individually and in groups) inbetween

scheduled activities. These activities include formal writing, such as a memo in

which students analyse and reflect upon course literature content.

The course is taught in English.

Assessment

The student will get one single grade, equivalent to 7,5 credits.

The examination taltes place continuously through individual and group assignments. The grade for the entire course is based on an assessment of all parts of the examination. Grading criteria are presented in the study guide that applies to the course section. The following grades will be used, pass with distinction (VG), pass (G) and fail (U). Examinations handed in late will not be assessed except under special circumstances. Any remaining supplemental work must be handed in by the deadline specified in the study guide.

For students who have not received a passing grade for the course, there is the opportunity to be examined without re-registration via amake-up exam.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Uppsala University does not accept cheating or plagiarism. Suspected incidents of cheating or plagiarism are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, which may issue a formal warning to the student or suspend the student from studies for a certain period.
