120 credits including 60 credits in mathematics.

Learning outcomes

In order to pass the course (grade 3) the student should be able to

  • solve standard problems within the areas covered by the course;
  • analyse and qualitatively describe the behaviour of solutions of dynamical systems and differential equations;
  • give mathematical formulations of the most relevant problems in applied mathematics that are covered during the course.

Content

The course gives an introduction to a number of modern methods and techniques in applied mathematics via examples from applied areas. The course consists of the following topics:

  • Dynamical systems;
  • Perturbation methods;
  • Calculus of variation;
  • Introduction to the theory of partial differential equations;
  • Sturm-Liouville problems and eigenfunctions expansions;
  • Integral equations.

Instruction

Lectures and problem solving sessions.

Assessment

Written examination at the end of the course. Moreover, compulsory assignments may be given during the course in accordance with instructions at the beginning of the course.
