Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is that the student acquires basic knowledge about impairment and disability and about the actions of the society to give support and service to people with disability. On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- briefly describe different definitions of disability from different models
- briefly account for social and health care services and supports to people with disabilities
- in different perspectives discuss and reflect on living conditions and health of people with disabilities
- explain and discuss impairment and disability from a gender perspective
Content
The course concerns the living conditions of children and adults with disabilities. During the course, the causes of different disabilities and the individuals' experiences to live with disability are addressed. The attitudes of the society towards individuals with disabilities in social policy and legislation are discussed as well as obstrucitve barriers and facilitating factors in the environment. Particularly, issues of participation and influence are noticed. Disability from a gender perspective is emphasised. Current research in the area is presented. WHOs classification ICF is presented.
Instruction
The teaching consists of lectures, and discussion seminars via Internet on the web page of the course.
Assessment
Grades used are Pass (G) and Fail (U). To pass the course, the student has to participate in all teaching and pass all examinations. Examination format: Web-based literature seminars and take-home examination. All teaching is compulsory. Student failing an assignment the first time is allowed 4 new tries (= in total 5 times) If special circumstances apply, the Undergraduate Education Committee can admit additional examination attempts.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
