Entry requirements
120 credits including 60 credits in mathematics including Ordinary Differential Equations I or Transform Methods. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- solve standard problems within the areas covered by the course;
- analyse and qualitatively describe the behaviour of solutions of dynamical systems and differential equations;
- give mathematical formulations of the most relevant problems in applied mathematics that are covered during the course.
- .
Content
The course gives an introduction to a number of modern methods and techniques in applied mathematics via examples from applied areas. The course consists of the following topics:
- Dynamical systems;
- Perturbation methods;
- Calculus of variation;
- Introduction to the theory of partial differential equations;
- Sturm-Liouville problems and eigenfunctions expansions;
- Integral equations.
Instruction
Lectures and problem solving sessions.
Assessment
Written examination at the end of the course. Moreover, compulsory assignments may be given during the course in accordance with instructions at the beginning of the course.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
