Entry requirements

60 credits in Science and Technology. Technical Thermodynamics, System analysis with energy applications, Scientific Computing II. Attendance in Fluid Mechanics for Energy-Related Applications, Electromagnetism II with Electric Circuits, Programming in Python.

Learning outcomes

After a successfully completed course the student should be able to:

  • explain the technical functioning and principles of various techniques for the utilisation and conversion of renewable energy, and how these technologies interact in larger systems,
  • mathematically describe and model renewable energy processes and perform calculations for different technical solutions,
  • apply established design principles under given constraints to designing systems for the utilisation and conversion of one or more renewable energy resources into electricity, heat or mechanical work,
  • evaluate and critically compare the technical and economic benefits of system solutions based on resource availability, energy demand and market conditions.

Content

The course covers a number of techniques for the utilisation and conversion of renewable energy, with an emphasis on active solar, wind, hydro, wave and bioenergy. Resource availability, system components and system design are specifically treated for each specific technology.

Instruction

Lectures, practical exercises, seminars and a smaller simulation projects carried out in groups.

Assessment

Active participation in exercises and seminars, oral project presentation and opposition as well as written exam.
