General provisions

The course is given as an independent course and within the framework of the Master's Programme in languages.

Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree with a language subject as the main field of study.

Learning outcomes

The course intends to give an introduction to the grammar and elementary skills in spoken and written Hindi and to give an understanding of the role of Hindi in South Asia and its distinctive features in the context of other Indian languages or other languages in its surroundings.

On completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to:

module 1: Hindi grammar and text in an indological perspective

- account for the spread and position within the Indian languages of Hindi;

- describe the emergence of Hindi;

- describe the fundamental features of the notation of Hindi phonology (sound structure) and elementary morphosyntax (form and syntax) using basic linguistic terminology;

- read, write and transcribe Devanagari;

- formulate simple sentences in Hindi;

- translate simple texts to and from Hindi by means of a dictionary;

- grammatically analyse simple prose texts in Hindi;

- independently carry out a brief comparative study where some of features of Hindi are contrasted with at least one other language.

module 2: Oral and written language proficiency in Hindi

- be able to reproduce the contents of simple conversations in Hindi;

- be able to account for the contents of a simple prose text in writing in Hindi;

- with aid write a grammatically correct short text in Hindi about a given subject;

- master a basic vocabulary that includes actively: greetings, relationships, means of transport, colours and forms, food and drink, the human body, geography and basic social situations;

- talk about the above said subjects with a native speaker;

- account for and use elementary differences between spoken and written language.

Instruction

The instruction consists of lectures, workshops and assessment.

The student's own learning activities are crucial for completion of the course.

Assessment

The examination in the course takes place through oral and written assignments. The written assignments consist of parts that take place at scheduled time and location (within the framework of regular teaching and in the form of a final examination), or be such that the student carry out on his own.

Module 1: Written examination assignments during the course and a final written examination. Minor essay around comparative issue Module 2: Oral and written examination under regular teaching, and at the end of the course.

To receive the grade passed with distinction on the entire course, passed with distinction in module 1 is required.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
