- describe how web applications use three-layer architecture,
- describe and give examples of how code quality can be ensured,
- describe the relationship between information systems and representation of online content.
Regarding competence and skills, the student should be able to
- create, manage and publish web based content (for example individual web pages and web sites) using a Content Management System (CMS),
- construct flows of information between server and client,
- design and publish digital content on a web platform.
Regarding critical evaluation and approach, the student should be able to

- discuss ethical implications of publishing content online.
Content
The course is divided into three parts:
(I) Information systems: The first part of the course introduces students to the fundamentals of information systems, the principles and methods for implementing information systems, and a system's life cycle. Fundamental concepts like data, information and knowledge are introduced. The concept "information system" is
introduced using relevant organisational contexts centred on the perspective of the "user". In addition, systems development as a method is introduced to facilitate a broad understanding of the relationship between information, communication and technology when developing web based IT-systems.
(II) Flows of information and information management: In the digital society we are increasingly dependent on managing a constant flow of information. Central concepts are structuring, transferring, and presenting information. This part furthermore briefly examines aspects of information management such as integrity, storage, ownership, and manipulation of data and information.
(III) Web applications: In this part of the course the theory from parts I and II are put into practice. The concepts of information systems and information flows are exemplified and made concrete through practical web site development exercises for a variety of communicational purposes and produce content such as news articles and blog posts. The student is shown and taught how and to what end various media content formats (e.g. text, sound, video and image) are integrated (installed, configured and modified) into a CMS-based website allowing the students to work with content related issues of representation and genre. Moreover, this part of the course introduces the concept code quality.
Instruction
Lectures, lessons, seminars, laboratory work, project work.
Assessment
Written exam, seminars, laboratory work, assignments, project work.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator or a decision by the department's working group for study matters.
Other directives
The course does not give eligibility to apply for continuing courses in information systems.
