Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • identify and describe Nordic vascular plants, mosses and lichens
  • use identification keys and descriptive literature to determine names of animals and plants
  • apply basic methodology for inventorying animals and plants

identify and describe common vertebrates, insects and other invertebrate animals of the Nordic fauna

Content

The course covers the Nordic flora and fauna, with a focus on identification of animals and plants (flowering plants and other land plants, also including lichens). Use of identification literature. Adaptations to the environment, plant and animal communities, reproduction and dissemination strategies, as well as inventory methods are generally addressed.

The individual project focuses on the inventory of flora and fauna in a given area.

Instruction

This course is taught mainly in the form of excursions in the field and museum studies with integrated lessons and group instruction, as well as lectures and exercises.

Assessment

Modules: Floristics 3.8 hp; Faunistics 3.7 hp; Project 2.5 credits. The floristics and faunistics modules are examined through written examinations. The project work is examined through a written report. All activities on the course except lectures are mandatory.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
