Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- explain and describe the technical functionality and principles of different thermal energy systems.
- describe the environmental impact of different energy conversion processes.
- explain and compare different thermal energy systems.
- explain and describe useable resources for thermal energy systems.
- carry out thermodynamic calculations in MATLAB.
- describe the energy conversion process in nuclear power reactors.
Content
The course deals with, vapour and combined power cycles, gas power cycles, steam turbines, gas turbines, district heating including heat exchanger, heat pumps, geothermal energy and energy conversion in nuclear power reactors.
The course content will cover techniques for conversion of energy resources, distribution and storing of energy and the aspects of energy usage in terms of emission of greenhouse gases and energy efficiency.
Instruction
Lectures, exercise groups and project works in form of study visits.
Assessment
Mandatory written and oral presentation of project works and hand in exercises (2 credits). Written examination at the end of the course (3 credits).
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
