Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should:

* have gained detailed knowledge about the earth's climate on a global and regional scale.

* have knowledge and be able to apply methods to classify climate

* be able to use statistical methods on large amount of meteorological data to extract climatological information.

* understand transport processes within the climate system as a result of classical physics

Content

Regional climate, classification of climate types (Köppen, Hendl), general circulation and its connection to conservation of energy and momentum for system earth/atmosphere.

Statistical evaluation of meteorological observations, measures of central tendency, measures of dispersion, distributions, Gauss distribution, Weibull distribution, probability analysis, regression analysis, correlations, homogenisations of time series of data, trend analysis, urban effects.

Instruction

Lectures, exercises in statistical analysis, home assignment

Assessment

Written examination.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
