Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- describe key events in the history of life and earth during 4.6 billion years
- describe the major diversity changes and mass extinctions
- describe key features in the evolution of the biosphere during the Phanerozoic
- describe the connection between climate change and the evolution of humans
Content
Evolutionary theory. Beginnings of life. The Cambrian world. The Palaeozoic seas. The invasion of land. The rise of the reptiles. Dinosaurs and birds. The Tertiary world. The rise of primates and Man.
Instruction
Lectures and practicals.
Assessment
Written examination (5 credits), practicals (2.5 credits).
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
