Entry requirements
120 credits in science/engineering. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- propose, motivate and evaluate solutions for different energy production environmental problems,
- make estimates on process efficiency, to assess advantages and drawbacks of individual methods,
- evaluate commercial solutions with respect to efficiency, byproducts and costs,
- set feasible criteria on the plasma-assisted processes,
- assess suitability of individual kinds of plasma for application in materials and surface engineering and in environmental applications.
Content
Air pollution control. Advantages and disadvantages of different gas cleaning technologies. Applications in non-renewable energy production: fossil fuels, waste-to-energy power plants, combustion, gasification and incineration, flue gas treatment. Energy production from biomass. Control of pollutant emissions from road traffic and marine vessel engines. Exhaust aftertreatment. Catalysis. Plasma assisted technologies. Conversion of CO2, NOx, SO2 and hydrocarbons, particulate matter abatement. Material aspects in renewable energy: durability, toughness, noise reduction. Materials for Exhaust Gas Recirculation.
Instruction
Lectures, project work and seminars.
Assessment
Written examination at the end of the course. Written and oral presentation of project work and problem solving tasks.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
