Algebra and vector geometry and Analysis for engineers.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • calculate water pressures and forces against dam gates and engineering constructions.
  • explain the concepts of laminar and turbulent flow.
  • describe supercritical and subcritical water flow.
  • compute water depths, flows and speeds in various types of channels.
  • describe how a so called hydraulic jump acts and how it arises.
  • calculate levels, flows and speeds in dam designs.
  • account for the groundwater flow phenomenon.

Content

Fundamental concepts in Hydraulics, hydrostatic pressure calculations on plane and curved surfaces. Hydrodynamics, laminar and turbulent flow, the Continuity equation, the energy equation (Bernoullis equation), the energy line and the pressure line ..

Pipe flow, energy losses, friction losses, supplement losses. Design of pipes. Channel flow, subcritical and supercritical water, uniform flow. Groundwater flow. Systems of managements and reservoirs. Turbines and pumps.

Instruction

Lectures and exercises.

Compulsory laboratory session.

Assessment

Compulsory written assignments (3 credits) and written examination (2 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
