Entry requirements
30 credits in science/engineering. Mechanics I/Mechanics basic course as well as Single Variable Calculus should have been attended.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- identify the purpose and function of various structures,
- analyse rods, shafts, beams, simple trusses and thin-walled pressure vessels with respect to internal forces, stresses and deformations,
- design structures to avoid failure by plastic deformations, fatigue and elastic instability.
Content
Axially loaded rods. Linear elastic material. Simple trusses. Torsion of circular shafts. Bending of beams. Stress and strain analysis. Hooke's law. Yield criteria. Fatigue. Elastic instability of beams. Design requirements. Orientation of the elastic properties of various materials.
Instruction
Lectures, lessons and laboratory work.
Assessment
Written examination (4.5 credits). Laboratory work (0.5 credits).
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
