Entry requirements

30 credits in science/engineering. Mechanics I and Single Variable Calculus should have been attended.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • identify the purpose and function of different structures,
  • analyse rods, shafts, beams, simple trusses, thin-walled pressure vessels and circular disks with respect to internal forces, stresses and deformations,
  • determine internal forces and deformations for rods, beams and simple trusses by using Castigliano's theorems and the theorem of minimum potential energy,
  • design structures to avoid failure by plastic deformations, fracture, fatigue and elastic instability.

Content

Axially loaded rods. Material properties: elastic, plastic and viscoelastic materials. Simple trusses. Torsion of circular shafts. Bending of beams. Stress and strain analysis. Hooke's law. Yield criteria. Fracture mechanics. Fatigue. Elastic instability of beams. Design requirements. Castigliano's theorems and the theorem of minimum potential energy.

Instruction

Lectures, lessons and laboratory work.

Assessment

Written examination at the end of the course (10 credits). Laboratory work (1 credit).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
