Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • account for the importance of technological development and innovation for economic growth and increased competitiveness on a firm level,
  • critically discuss a firm's need to have a strategic and integrated approach to be able to successfully manage innovation and technical development,
  • analyse complex innovation processes in firms both internally and externally. This incorporates for instance basic knowledge about partnerships, alliances, research and development, commercialisation and industrial marketing.

Content

The course aims to provide students with basic concepts and awareness in technological innovation and an understanding of the challenges and opportunities that small and large firms face in relation to this. The course has an integrated approach to tackling the complex concepts in and knowledge about technological innovation in relation to technological development. The course covers areas such as the importance of innovation, leadership in research and development, management of innovation and technology, partnerships, networks and alliances, product and process development, commercialisation of research as well as entrepreneurship and business creation.

Instruction

Lectures, guest lectures, seminars and case studies.

Assessment

Written assignments during the course and active participation in seminars and exercises (2 credits). Individual written exam (3 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
