Entry requirements

Algebra and Vector Geometry. Calculus for Engineers should have been attended.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • identify the purpose and function of various structures,
  • analyse rods, shafts, beams and simple trusses with respect to internal forces, stresses and deformations,
  • apply the handbook solutions for beams,
  • design structures to avoid failure by plastic deformations and elastic instability.

Content

Axially loaded rods. Linear elastic material. Simple trusses. Torsion of circular shafts. Bending of beams. Elastic instability of beams. Design requirements.

Instruction

Lectures, lessons, written assignments and laboratory work.

Assessment

Assignments and laboratory work (1 credit), written examination (9 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method.
