General provisions
Substitutes earlier course 3FN236 or 3FN001, Pharmaceutical biotechnology. The course is presented by both the Department of Medicinal Chemistry division of pharmacognosy and The Department of Pharmacy. The course can be used in order to achieve special eligibility for admission to pharmaceutical doctoral studies.
Entry requirements
Within the pharmacy programme applies that 60 credits from term 1-2 have been achieved and that the student has followed all earlier courses within the programme. For admission to single subject course is required one of the alternatives: a) Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science, 80 credit points or 120 credit points/180 credits b) 40 credit points/60 credits in chemistry and biology c) Other education according to special considerations.
Learning outcomes
The student should on completion of the course: * know and be able to explain and compare methods for industrial production of low and high molecular pharmaceutical substances by means of biotechnology, such as antibiotics, vaccines and proteins.
* know and be able to explain advantages and disadvantages with different production systems, such as bacteria and plant and animal cells for biotechnological drugs. * know and be able to account for the development of the biotechnology (for example gene therapy and stem cell research) and the biotechnological methods that are used today in pharmaceutical research and industry. * be able to discuss the biotechnology role in the society.
Content
The course is directed towards biotechnology in pharmaceutical research and industry.
Instruction
The teaching takes place in the form of lectures and group exercise. During this course the students receive specific training on how to compile and present scientific information in the format of a poster. Compulsory parts of the course: group exercise and final account are compulsory, and lectures as specified in the itinerary.
Assessment
For passed examination, it is required that the student has accomplished compulsory parts (examination code) of the course and passed examination (examination code).
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
Supplementation of not accomplished compulsory parts can take place at the earliest at next course and then in case of a vacancy.
