Learning outcomes
After completion of the course, the student should:
- have awareness and understanding of the central theories in developmental psychology and be able to explain and critically compare them,
- have knowledge of child and youth development, and be able to explain the main aspects of biological, cognitive, language, and socio-emotional development,
- have the ability to critically discuss how individual development interacts with cultural and societal conditions.
Content
The course provides a general introduction to the area of developmental psychology and basic knowledge in child development. The course will additionally illustrate how biological predispositions and experiential processes work together over time. Central areas of study include:
- Theories and methods for studying child development
- Biological and motor development
- Cognitive and language development
- Socio-emotional development
- Identity development, including gender
- The importance of family, culture, and media in development
Instruction
The teaching consists of teaching sessions and seminars. Students will also attend a tour of the Uppsala Child and Baby Lab.
Assessment
Students' knowledge is assessed via written examination, assignments, and active participation in seminars. For examination, the grades used are passed and failed.
