General provisions
The course is compulsory for students admitted to the Master's program in implementation, transformative learning and sustainability, but can also be given as a stand-alone course.
Entry requirements
A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students are expected to be able to:
- Describe the principals of underlying tools, approaches and methods for facilitation and process design to implement a global health and sustainability agenda.
- Apply tools, approaches and methods and techniques for project management or conflict management, at group, organisation and or policy level.
- Critically evaluate and adapt different tools and methods in response to diverse contexts and situations.
- Design a basic evaluation and monitoring process.
Content
Departing from the global health and sustainability agenda, this course is aimed to introduce and train students in using different research tools and methods to support the implementation of actions in complex contexts characterised by dilemmas such as food security, climate change, water security and emerging disease threats.
During the course, students have the opportunity to learn about, apply, and constructively criticise tools, methods and approaches for stakeholder facilitation and learning process design - devices that range from theoretical models, typologies and conceptual frameworks, social reflexive process tools, soft systems methodologies, story-telling, and heuristics. Students will apply these in class settings and actual practice, focusing on global health and sustainability challenges.
Instruction
The course consists of lectures, literature studies, mandatory seminars and group and individual assignments and presentations. Sessions are interactive and students are encouraged to draw on their own experiences from the fields presented. The course will include a significant field component where students will have the opportunity to apply tools, methods and approaches and reflect upon facilitation and process design for project or conflict management. Within the course, students will focus on how stakeholder facilitation and process design can address conflicts of interest. Language of instruction is English.
Assessment
All written exams and mandatory parts must be approved to pass the course. The course's final grade is based on a weighted rating of all course sections. Possibility to complete non-approved mandatory assignments may be given at the next course opportunity, at the earliest, and only in case of vacancy. If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator. All examinations are in English.
