Learning outcomes
The aim with this course is to give a basic knowledge in important aspects of materials chemistry and materials science for those students who have not studied the subject on a basic level.
On completion of the course, the student shall be able to:
- describe and state the conditions for Fick's diffusion laws and apply them to solve diffusion problems as well as describe typical diffusion mechanisms,
- draw and interpret binary and ternary phase diagrams and be able to describe the connection between the microstructure and appearance of the phase diagram,
- explain central concepts in connection to phase transformation,
- describe the connections between structure, bonding and property as well as state areas of applications for some technologically important material systems.
Content
Phase diagrams and basic thermodynamics of materials. Phase transformations. Basic diffusion theory. Important alloys systems- Computational.
Instruction
Lectures or seminars and laboratory work
Assessment
Written examination (4hp), laboratory work (1hp).
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
