General provisions

The course is part of the minor field of study Expression in Convergent Media.

The course is a freestanding course and elective course in the Bachelor's programmes Game Design and Graphics, 180 credits.

Entry requirements

30 credits in game design and/or expression and Expression and 2D Graphics for Games 2, 7.5 credits, or the equivalent

Learning outcomes

The overall aim of the course is for the student to cultivate a more advanced artistic and technical competence in 2D-graphics for digital games. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a deeper theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in visual communication,
  • Exhibit more advanced knowledge and skills in character design, as well as understand and construct the character's role and impact in the game experience,
  • Display a deeper knowledge and skills in developing environments and props with design intent to support the character, and,
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills in artistic creation of various 2D-graphic components and convey how this, within game design, can result in a uniform experience.

Content

The course aims for the student to gain a deeper understanding of more advanced visual communication theory and expression. Emphasis lies on the visual development pipeline from pre-production to completed production with a deeper understanding of design intention in the form of a central project. The content includes but is not limited to visual narrative through the production of character design, and through the production of environments and props that support the character from a storytelling perspective.

Instruction

This course combines classroom activities and individual study. Classroom activities are in the form of lectures, seminars and workshops.

The course is taught in English.

Assessment

The course uses either Pass with distinction, Pass, or Fail for grading. Examination is in the form of practical assignments and oral presentations that revolve around the project.

Grading is based on the degree to which these assignments demonstrate an understanding and application of the theoretical, technical and artistic content in the course.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Uppsala University does not accept cheating or plagiarism. Suspected incidents of cheating or plagiarism are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, which may issue a formal warning to the student or suspend the student from studies for a certain period.
