Entry requirements
60 credits in science/engineering. Power Electronics should have been attended.
Learning outcomes
The course cover the different components of all-electric powertrains. The course focuses on energy storage, the construction and control of the electric motor, as well as sensors. Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- describe and dimension the different parts of the all-electric powertrain,
- calculate the requirement of energy and power for a given vehicle,
- explain how a synchronous motor works, and how it can be controlled,
- explain how a number of findustrial sensors work,
- use a microcontroller for measurement and control of power electronics.
Content
Overview of the components of the all-electric powertrain and their function. How the total amount of required stored energy can be calculated. How the required power from the motor can be calculated. Function and control of (permanently magnetized) synchronous motors. PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) as well as control of power electronics using microcontrollers. Industrial sensors for measurement of rotational speed, current and magnetic fields. Analog to digital conversion.
Instruction
Lectures, laboratory exercises and project supervision.
Assessment
Written exam (3 credits). Written project report (1 credit). Demonstration of project work (1 credit).
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
