Entry requirements
Access to the course requires that all courses in semester 1 and 2, as well as the course Physiotherapy III (3PT031) are passed.
Learning outcomes
The course is intended to provide advanced knowledge in scientific methodology and physiotherapy. Students have to plan and document a delimited project in the form of a project plan, under supervision.
On completing the course, students are expected to be able to:
1. give an account of qualitative and quantitative research designs.
2. give an account of basic descriptive and analytical statistics and qualitative analytical methods.
3. compile information, formulate questions, choose and justify research design and method based on specific questions and type of data in a project plan for a delimited research project.
4. give an account of ethical issues pertaining to the planned research in the project plan.
5. present a written project plan.
6. review, evaluate and discuss their own and other students' project plans.
Content
Scientific methodology and research designs, statistics, research-ethical guidelines and critical review of research projects.
Instruction
The course is given in the form of lectures and includes supervision of the research project, which is conducted in pairs (two students).
Assessment
Approved assignment in treatment of data (intended course learning outcome 2).
Approved written project plan (intended course learning outcomes 1, 3, 4, 5).
Active participation in seminars/workshops (intended course learning outcomes 1-3).
Approved oral defence of project plan (intended course learning outcome 6).
Approved oral and written review of another project plan (intended course learning outcome 6).
Participation in two assessment seminars in addition to the defence of the student's own project plan and the review of another project plan (intended course learning outcome 6).
Students who fail an examination have the right to take the examination another four (4) times, i.e. to attempt the examination a total of five (5) times. Every time the student participates in an examination is regarded as an examination attempt. Submission of a 'blank' examination paper counts as an examination attempt. A maximum of one (1) retake opportunity is arranged per semester. If special circumstances apply, the programme committee can, after five (5) failed examinations, permit an additional examination. The student has the right to request a change of examiner after two failed examinations.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may decide to make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
