Entry requirements

120 credits with Dynamics of Earth Systems - Global Change, 10 credits, or Our Natural Resources, 10 credits. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Describe the influence of mitigation, preparation, response and recovery on natural hazards.
  • Discuss and propose solutions to complex problems in disaster risk reduction.
  • Compare and critically analyse recent disasters caused by natural events.

Content

The course inspects the disaster cycle (mitigation, preparation, response and recovery) in relation to the interaction of natural hazards, such as floods, droughts and earthquakes, with human society. Students will discuss and propose solutions to complex problems in disaster risk reduction, where the disaster cycle is compared and critically analysed in relation to recent events.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars, and exercises.

Assessment

Participation in seminars (1 credit), oral and written presentation of reports (4 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
