Entry requirements
120 credits including Mechanics and Flow Dynamics/Fluid mechanics/Power Engineering. The course is offered in two parallel versions, Flow Dynamics/Fluid mechanics is essential to be able to read Fluid mechanics orientation and Power Engineering in order to read Power engineering orientation. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- calculate spillway capacity,
- describe how a river is regulated for regulating power and base load,
- explain frequency stability and voltage regulation and perform analyses with the use of the swing equation,
- reason on the environmental aspects of hydropower.
Besides the basic requirements, students following the hydraulic specification will be able to:
- perform calculations using Eulers turbine equaions,
- describe the difference between different turbines,
- perform calculations on pressure transients in the water ways.
Besides the basic requirements, students following the electrical specification will be able to:
- calculate active and reactive power from basic generator parameters
- explain how power is transmitted in the power system
Content
History and hydropower layout, Dams, spillways and waterways, Meteorology, hydrology and water access, regulation and dynamics, environment and laws, marine current power, pumped hydropower, production planning.
Hydraulic specification: Hydraulics, applied fluid mechanics, Turbine and draft tube, Hydraulic transients
Elelctrical specification: Generator, generator behaviour on the grid, transmission of power.
Instruction
Lectures and tutorials as well as seminars.
Assessment
Written exam at the end of the course. Active participation in seminars.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
Other directives
The course may not be included in a degree together with 1TE029, 1TE208 eller 1ET202 - Hydroelectric power - Technology and Systems.
