Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree and participation in courses in biophysics of at least 45 credits at Master's level including Experimental Methods in Biophysics and Applied Molecular Biophysics, where of 25 credits completed. Admission requires a project plan accepted by the department. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course the student shall be able to:

  • search for and critically interpret and compile relevant scientific literature.
  • creatively delimit a scientific problem, plan a scientific investigation of the problem, choose appropriate methods, carry out the investigation, interpret and evaluate the results, and where appropriate be able to generate testable hypotheses to explain observations made all within given time frames
  • present the results in a correct and good language for different target groups in both scientific and popular scientific form.
  • give constructive criticism of others' texts in biophysics
  • demonstrate deep knowledge in a self-chosen part of biophysics

Content

An independent work is carried out, where the knowledge from previously completed courses is applied. The work is carried out under the guidance of supervisors in close connection with ongoing research or development projects.

To achieve the goals, the student must:

  • under supervision, delimit a scientific problem, investigate this, interpret and evaluate the results and present the work orally and in writing
  • search, evaluate and compile information relevant to the chosen problem
  • actively participate in seminars and other activities in the workplace where the work is performed
  • comment and give constructive criticism of other students works (e.g. as an opponent).

Instruction

Individual supervision.

Assessment

Written and oral presentation. The written presentation must consist of a scientific report with a popular scientific summary. In order to be approved, the student must also have acted as opponent for another degree project within the same main area.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
