60 credits in science/engineering, including Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calculus.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course the student shall be able to:​

  • analytically solve problems within basic mechanics, solid mechanics and fluidics,
  • apply fundamental quantities of classical mechanics and use relationships between these quantities to solve simpler problems,
  • apply Newton's laws,
  • describe fundamental concepts and quantities in solid mechanics and apply these to simpler design problems,
  • apply Bernoulli's equation, hydrostatic pressure and the continuity equation,
  • use mathematical tools used in fluid mechanics and classical mechanics.

Content

Mathematics

Vectors, scalar product, cross product, gradient, divergence, rotation.

Strength of materials

Stress, strain, modulus of elasticity, Hooks law, safety factor, stress-strain diagram

Mechanics

Newton's laws, impulse, momentum, angular momentum, inertia tensor, torque, power, energy,

Fluid mechanics

Bernoulli's equation, hydrostatic pressure, iso-lines, continuity equation,

Instruction

Lectures, lessons and assignments.

Assessment

Written exam (4 credits) and assignments (1 credit).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
