Entry requirements

60 credits in the Bachelor's Programme in Construction Engineering. Construction Materials, Building Design and Drawing, and Project 1: Designing of Detached House.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • explain how different phases in the life cycle of a building contribute to the environmental impact,
  • explain what life cycle analyses (LCA) and life cycle costs (LCC) mean as methods and when applied over the life cycle of a building,
  • use building information modelling (BIM) to analyse the environmental impact of a building,
  • carry out life cycle analysis (LCA) and life cycle cost analysis (LCC) of a building as a system,
  • identify and reflect on measures that decrease environmental impact and costs over the life cycle of a building.

Content

Life cycle analysis, life cycle cost analysis and environmental certification of buildings and the construction process. Overview of basic factors that influence the environmental impact of buildings, e.g. choices of materials and components, transport and choices of energy sources and systems. Application of methods and tools to analyse and evaluate different solutions that decrease the environmental impact and costs of buildings from a life cycle perspective.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars and supervision of group assignment.

Assessment

Presentation of assignments (1 credit), written and oral presentation of project work (2 credits) and written examination (2 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding targeted pedagogical support from the university's disability coordinator.
