Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- describe medical technology activities at a medical technology company or a medical technology department in a hospital,
- explain how maintenance and management of medical devices is carried out in hospitals,
- explain the principles of electrical and gas safety for medical devices at a basic level,
- describe the function and areas of use of a medical device,
- demonstrate the function of a medical device,
- identify risks with a medical device,
- discuss medical technology issues with professionals in the field,
- identify risks with medical devices and carry out risk analysis and risk management.
Content
Workplace training at a medical technology department in a hospital or medical technology company. Practical handling and studies of medical equipment. Maintenance and management of medical devices. The process for selecting medical equipment. Risk analysis and risk management of medical equipment. Introduction to electrical and gas safety for medical equipment.
Instruction
Lectures, laboratory work, a seminar and workplace training at a hospital or medical technology company. All students will have supervision of personnel at hospital or at medical technology company. Students will perform their workplace training within the region of Uppsala or in other locations in Sweden.
Assessment
Continuous written reports of the performed activities at the medical technology department or company (5 credits). Laboratory work (1 credit). Written and oral reports related to the workplace training (3 credits). Written and oral description of a medical device (1 credit).
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
Transitional provisions
There may be requirements from the hospitals that students who are placed there have certain vaccinations.
