Learning outcomes

Following successful completion of the course students will be able to:

- Identify different methodologies and methods within feminist research and gender studies.

- Apply different methodologies and methods in relevant empirical and theoretical contexts.

- Critically review interdisciplinary knowledge production in feminist research and gender studies with regard to academic content as well as in terms of form and style.

- Independently reflect on, motivate and constructively discuss methodological and method choices and approaches in both one's own work as well as the academic writing of others in the interdiciplinary field of gender studies.

Content

Research within the multi- and interdisciplinary subject of Gender Studies, is grounded in methodologies and methods from across the humanities and social sciences. The focus of this course is the intersection between feminist, gender studies and queer theory on the one hand and academic practice including data collection, research ethics and the writing process on the other. The course is structured around seminars with researchers working at the Centre for Gender Research. These seminars address specific research methods such as ethnography, interviews, text analysis, and visual methods as well as research ethics, data processing, and the interdisciplinary master's thesis as a text genre. Students are expected to engage in the 'peer response' process by reading other students work, providing feedback and presenting their own research projects.

Instruction

The course is obligatory for students at the Master's programme in Gender Studies. The course is delivered through a series of lectures and/or seminars. The language of instruction is English.

The course material consists partly of the students' own texts, partly of articles selected in consultation with the guest lecturer, and partly other relevant publications on research methodology, methods and academic writing.

Assessment

The course is examined through ongoing oral and written assessment.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

All student papers will be subject to a plagiarism check.
