Entry requirements
120 credits with (1) 90 credits in earth science and 15 credits in chemistry, (2) 90 credits in physics and 30 credits in earth science, 3) 90 credits in engineering and 30 credits in earth science, or 4) 90 credits in geology. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course the student shall be able to:
- explain plate tectonics and plate tectonic processes, and the evolution of continental crust from present to Archaean,
- critically analyze the connection between tectonic processes and the resulting phenomena on various scales.
- apply various methods including strain analysis and interpretation of microstructures,
- apply theoretical and practical foundations for experimental methods for studying tectonic processes.
Content
The driving forces of global geodynamics and tectonics, including the concepts of stress and strain. The characteristics of different tectonic environments, such as mid-ocean ridges, subduction and collision zones, and transform faults. The link between geodynamic processes and the formation of oceanic and continental crust, volcanism, seismicity and the formation of natural resources. Characterisation of deformation at microscale using polarisation microscopy. Introduction to the principles, and application of, modelling geodynamic and tectonic processes.
Instruction
Lectures and practical exercises.
Assessment
Written report and practical examination (5 credits). Written examination (5 credits).
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
Other directives
Cannot be included in the same degree as 1MP005 Tectonics.
