Entry requirements

120 credits with (1) 90 credits in earth science and 15 credits in chemistry, (2) 90 credits in physics and 30 credits in earth science, 3) 90 credits engineering and 30 credits earth science, or 4) 90 credits geology. Participation in Mineralogy and Gemmology (can also be taken in parallel). English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course the student shall be able to:

  • interpret geochemical data from volcanic and magmatic settings,
  • critically analyze and discuss processes involved in magma production and evolution,
  • construct and employ geochemical models and use them for interpretation of volcanic and magmatic processes.

Content

Geochemistry and petrology of different volcanic and magmatic settings and mantle sources. Investigate magmatic systems using mineral chemistry and mineral-melt thermobarometry to determine magmatic processes and conditions of crystallisation. Geochemical modelling including processes of differentiation, melting and thermobarometry. Major element, trace element and isotope data will be used for projects investigating specific magmatic or volcanic settings. Discussion of volcanic hazards and geothermal resources.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars, practicals and project work,

Assessment

Microscopy exercise (1 credit). Oral presentation and written project report (4 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.

Transitional provisions

Cannot be included in the same degree as 1MP000 Mineralogy and petrology, 15,0 credits.
