Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
- examine, analyse, and explain how psychological theories address issues related to gender;
- examine, analyse, and explain how psychological theories address issues related to gender identity;
- examine, analyse, and explain how psychological theories address issues related to ethnicity;
- exemplify how knowledge in these areas can be applied within the field of psychology and in professional life;
- critically analyse research results based on presented theoretical positions and exemplify how they can be applied within the field of psychology and in professional practice;
- analyse the epistemological perspectives that underlie gender research;
- identify manifestations of different perspectives on body, gender, and health from a historical perspective;
- explain similarities and differences in various definitions of gender, gender identity, and ethnicity, and be able to discuss their consequences.
Content
The course aims to increase understanding of the significance of gender, gender identity, and ethnicity in the study of various areas of psychology. It provides an opportunity to practice skills in analysing and critically examining research results and phenomena based on presented theoretical positions regarding gender, gender identity, and ethnicity, and to apply them in various areas of psychology. The course presents key concepts, theoretical perspectives, and research methods related to gender, gender identity, and ethnicity, as well as how these have evolved within the main areas of psychology such as biology and evolution, body and health, developmental psychology, personality, social psychology, work life, epistemology, and feminist psychology. The course addresses gender, gender identity, and ethnicity from group and individual psychological perspectives.
Instruction
Teaching is given in the form of lectures and seminars.
Assessment
Assessment of the student's knowledge is conducted through individual assignments, individual written reports, and active participation in seminars. The grading scale used for assessment is fail, pass, and pass with distinction.
Other directives
Guidelines for the preparation of assignments, etc., will be provided at the beginning of the course. Students who miss seminars are usually given the opportunity to make up for the missed components in the following semester or are assigned replacement tasks by the course director.
