Entry requirements

Participation in Algebra and Vector Geometry and Calculus for Engineers.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • analyze the equilibrium of a system under forces and moments,
  • identify the purpose and function of various structures,
  • analyse bars, shafts, beams and simple trusses with respect to internal forces, stresses and deformations,
  • apply the handbook solutions for beams,
  • design structures to avoid failure by plastic deformations and elastic instability.

Content

The equilibrium of structures under external forces and moments is analyzed.  To analyze deformable objects, the concept of stress is introduced to quantify internal forces and the concept of strain is introduced to quantify the deformation. The material models are governed to relate the stress and strain in deformable objects. The deformation in bars under axial deformation, system of bars, shafts under torsion, and beam under bending is discussed. The elastic instability of beams under compression loading is predicted. The design requirement is formulated for avoiding the failure of structure due to plastic deformation and buckling.

Instruction

Lectures, exercise sessions, written assignments and laboratory work.

Assessment

Assignments and laboratory work (2 credits), written examination (8 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
