General provisions

Commercial Law C is at C level and is given as a freestanding course and can be included in education programs at Uppsala University when the degree system allows.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, students are expected to have

  • demonstrated ability to formulate and analyse commercial law issues independently, using an appropriate legal method,
  • demonstrated substantially in-depth knowledge and understanding within the subject of commercial law,
  • demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the scientific basis of commercial law,
  • independently authored a larger essay on a current legal issue,
  • demonstrated a good ability to communicate in written and oral form in matters relating to commercial law.

Content

The course contains two sub-courses of 15 higher education credits each. The sub-courses run parallel throughout the course. The first part of the course consists of two parallel seminar series. One seminar series deals with fundamental problems in connection with scientific thinking and commercial law method and how this method relates to social science research in general. The second seminar series is structured around questions connected to the thesis work.

The second part of the course consists of an essay in which the subject in question becomes the subject of a deeper investigation and analysis. The finished essay will be subject to assessment during a special essay seminar.

Instruction

The teaching initially consists of seminars where each participant, individually or in a group, has to perform and report on given tasks orally and in writing. During the subsequent essay writing, continuous supervision is given. The essay work ends with a seminar where the text is tested and assessed. The right to supervision ends with the final seminar.

In addition to seminars, there are also lectures.

Assessment

Examination takes place in two modules:

  1. Seminars, 15 higher education credits (U, G)
  2. Essay, 15 higher education credits (U, G, VG)

The seminar module uses the grading scale Pass (G) and Fail (U). The module is continuously examined at all of the course's seminars.

The essay module uses the grade scale Pass with distinction (VG), Pass (G) and Fail (U). The module is examined at the concluding seminar with a public discussion of each paper and the final submission of the essay.

In addition, a mandatory quiz on cheating and plagiarism is carried out.

The final grade for the course is determined by a weighting of the course's examination modules, where the emphasis is on the essay module. The grade scale used is Pass with distinction (VG), Pass (G) and Fail (U). For the course grade Pass (G), the grade Pass (G) is required on both of the modules. For the course grade Pass with distintion (VG), the grade Pass (G) is required on the seminar module and the grade "Pass with distinction" (VG) is required on the essay module.

Any replacement assignments must be submitted at the time indicated for each course session. If this does not happen, the grade of Fail (U) is obtained for the module and the entire module (including all examination elements) must then be redone, which can only be done by re-registration at subsequent course sessions. For students who completed the seminar series but did not receive a passing grade on the essay, there is the option to submit a revised version of the essay for assessment at later submission times without re-registration.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Uppsala University does not accept cheating or plagiarism. Suspected incidents of cheating or plagiarism are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, which may issue a formal warning to the student or suspend the student from studies for a certain period.

NOTE: Only completed courses can count toward a degree.

Other directives

All seminars are mandatory.
