Learning outcomes
After passing the course, students should be able to
- explain basic relationships between structure and properties for metallic, ceramic, polymeric and composite materials,
- make qualitative comparisons between materials and indicate the application areas of the most common engineering materials in the different classes of materials,
- interpret and use binary phase diagrams,
- describe the underlying mechanisms for hardening of metals,
- describe the different methods of testing materials,
- give an account of process engineering concepts for plastic working, cutting, welding, powder metallurgy, additive manufacturing and mould-based manufacturing (casting, forging, injection moulding, etc.),
- give an account of basic relationships among manufacturing process, material properties, part geometry, batch size and part quality,
- describe the importance of repeatability and reproducibility when using basic workshop measurement techniques to characterise tolerances in manufactured parts,
- justify an appropriate manufacturing process for a component and adapt it for production based on an analysis of geometry, material and batch size,
- characterise sustainability aspects for manufacturing processes through material selection, material waste generation, energy consumption and social impacts.
Content
Material structure and deformation mechanisms. Relationship between atomic bonds, microstructure and macroscopic properties. Phase diagrams. Materials testing. Properties and applications of technical materials in all material classes: metals, polymers, ceramics and composites. Basic process engineering concepts such as plastic working, cutting, welding, powder metallurgy, additive manufacturing, mould-based manufacturing (casting, forging, injection moulding, etc.). Different manufacturing methods and the characteristics of the manufactured product (e.g. tolerances, surface roughness and cost of production). Sustainability aspects related to material selection and manufacturing methods.
Instruction
Lectures, exercis classes, laboratory exercises, supervision of project assignments and visits at an industrial company.
Assessment
Written tests (6 credits), laboratory sessions (2 credits) and oral and written presentation of project assignment (2 credits).
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding targeted pedagogical support from the university's disability coordinator.
