Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • use skills acquired from the course to develop personal responsibility in line with personal values
  • describe the role of story, myth and metaphor in how we construct and uphold worldviews and belief systems that impact how we relate to ourselves, each other and our planet
  • use story, myth and metaphor alongside system thinking and game design processes to build fictional worlds that have the potential to engage with thinking around the future, both personally, as well as globally.

Content

Drawing on three core pillars - the power of story and myth; the power of systems and play; and the power of embodied experiencing - this course creates a three part program that aims to invite students into new perspectives on their relationship with the planet, of finding firm footing within themselves as the basis for transformative action, to spark their imaginations and instill hope and a sense of agency.

Ways of being: Explores connection to natural environments through out-of-classroom experiences, brings the body into the creative process and grounds design processes in values and knowing the "for the sake of what?"

Ways of imagining: Builds on Ways of being by adding story and myth. Students create playful rituals, which are informed by and explores metaphors that promote the imagination of new possibilities for connected and thriving futures for all.

Ways of creating: This part puts it all together, harnessing practices from game design, storytelling and system thinking. Students create tangible experiences that invite players into possibility spaces that indicate new pathways forward, together, towards a thriving planet for all.

The students will create non-digital interactive experiences and play spaces with a clearly articulated intent, and engage in an iterative design process with relevant audiences.

Instruction

This course is an active and engaged mix of different kinds of seminars, creative work and group projects.

Assessment

To pass this course, students need to participate in mandatory workshops and seminars. Moreover, students present the outcomes of their design work as well as their findings through the testing process, in a verbal presentation or a written report.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University´s disability coordinator.
