Tidsperiod: 2011-01-01 till 2013-12-31

The purpose of the project is a study of the Ethiopian dissident (?heretic?) monastic community of the Stephanites (from the name of its founder Stephen, 15th cent.). The community he had established had its centre in the Monastery of Gundä Gunde, north-eastern Ethiopia. The Stephanites were persecuted, but the exact reason for that are not known. Recently a Swedish-Canadian expedition digitalised the complete collection of the manuscripts in Gunda Gunde, and it is this opportunity that motivates the present project. The first task will be to prepare a catalogue of the collection which contains texts otherwise unknown, of historical and religious-historical value. Since the material provides a rare opportunity to see the complete library of an Ethiopian monastery, the whole collection will be analysed with the purpose of gaining information on the intellectual equipment of a monastic community. This will in its turn show what parts of Ethiopian literary and intellectual legacy was used in forming the set of knowledge trasfrerred in the monastic school system to next generations. One more purpose of the project will be choosing what can be regarded as a valuable text from the historical point of view and edit the Ethiopic text with an English translation. This text will be chosen after the previous analyses have been done.
