The main objective of the project is to study ceramic materials for development of a new oral drug technology platform for pain management and to establish fundamental understanding in this technology platform for controlled release of drugs from ceramic carrier materials. It is the aim of the project to develop a ceramic carrier material that has potential to fulfil both the material aspects and the pharmaceutical requirements regarding mechanical integrity and release profile. Within the proposed project different ceramic materials will be evaluated and the aim is to build knowledge about the factors controlling the drug release profile. In order to achieve this, information about the carrier materials will be correlated to the drug release profiles. A further aim is to investigate the possibility to modify the carrier material with the purpose to achieve a carrier which both has slow release of drug and is tamper resistant. Within this project the material science (Uppsala University) contributes with the knowledge of material properties of the carrier while the applicant (Orexo AB) is contributing with pharmaceutical science and expertise within drug release and development of a drug product.
