Shahname ´Book of Kings´, written by Abu al-Qasim Hasan Ferdousi, is the Iranian national epos from the early 11th century. It is one of the major authentic documents of New Persian that has been credited for its decisive role in the revival of the Persian Language after the Arabic invasion, and as one of the pillars of Iranian nationality and identity. The final version of Shahname was completed in 1010. Due to this fact, UNESCO named the year 2010 as the year of Shahname and the announcement of this event to the world. The year 2011 marks the beginning of the second millennium of this great literary work of humanity. The idea of holding an international conference on the occasion of the second millennium of Ferdousi?s Shahname has been suggested by the scholars and the students of Iranian studies as well as Iranian immigrants in Sweden. It is the first time that the Department of Linguistics and Philology (Iranian Studies) at Uppsala University is planning such a conference on the highly celebrated Classical Persian literature. The main aim of the conference is to create an opportunity for Iranian and world Shahname scholars to exchange ideas regarding various questions and issues in Shahname, and to communicate the results to students of Iranian studies.
