Nutrition, i.e. the interaction between food intake, metabolism and body composition, is a main denominator for health, functionality and longevity. Nutrition has strong implications on age-related cognitive decline and physical impairments, which are serious threats to independent life-styles. This research project evaluates 1) dietary patterns, eg. Mediterranean-like diet or carbohydrate-restricted diet, and their major determinants, in several national and international population based cohorts, according to long-term survival, cognitive decline and incidence of dementia, as well as of muscle function, 2) the role and potential effect mechanisms of n-3 fatty acid supplementation to elderly patients with mild-moderate Alzheimer?s disease, 3) the prevalence, consequences, mechanisms and potential treatment of sarcopenia, i.e. low muscle mass and reduced muscle function, in old populations and geriatric patients. The project plan involves the collaboration of about twenty national and international research groups, and the major global food companies, that combine first class competence on food registrations, metabolism, molecular biology, muscle function and cognitive disorders. It is truly translational as it combines epidemiology, mechanistic and intervention studies, with great promises to improve clinical practice. The project has the capability to create knowledge and break-throughs on nutritional and related factors of significance for health and well-being at old age.
