This proposal envisages a research project in the field of systems and signals that will lead to innovative tools for modeling, analysis and design of endocrine pulsatile feedback systems. In this target area the use of formal control theory and signal processing methods is currently deemed to be most promising and subject to active research. Recently developed by the project group mathematical models of pulsatile hormone secretion will be used to devise algorithms for biological data processing and computerized medical interventions.The project relies on systems and signals theoretic methods and particularly on ideas from system identification, signal processing, as well as nonlinear and discontinuous control. Experimental biological and clinical data will be utilized to estimate and characterize parameters of mathematical models capturing endogenous endocrine feedback mechanisms. Model-based controller design methods will be developed and used to improve the efficacy of medical treatments by means of synthesized exogenous feedback and with emphasis on hormone pulse timing. .
