A challenge for science is to develop methods for creating large areas of material that have defined structures as the atoms in a crystal, but the scale of tens of nanometers. This project addresses this goal by utilizing the property of nanoparticles dispersed in a liquid such as water, to organize with high degree of order and yet retain fluid characteristics. If these structures can be retained when the solvent is then removed, large areas (several square centimeters) can be prepared with uniformly orientation and crystalline order. Preliminary studies have shown that polystyrene particles can form large ´crystals´ and that metal films can then be templated so as to give nanodots. These could be used, for example, as data storage materials. The project will investigate size limits of these structures by testing particles that are smaller than those used previously. Studies will be made of a further significant step in this process: we will seek ways to ´lock´ structures that are formed in liquids so that defects do not form when they are dried. In parallel fundamental studies of the factors that control the behaviour of particles at interfaces and in the bulk will allow further optimisation.
