The conference The Role of National Parliaments in the EU-legislative Procedure: A Comparative Analysis of the Principle of Subsidiarity and the Early Warning Mechanism will be held at Uppsala University in the beginning of September 2014. Conference conveners are Anna Jonsson Cornell and Marco Goldoni. The overall purpose of the conference is to analyze the impact of the Early Warning Mechanism (EWM) on the relationship between national parliaments and the EU-legislator and to assess its impact on the legitimacy of the EU. Moreover, the EWM, including the scrutiny of the principle of subsidiarity, raises many questions of direct relevance for national constitutional orders, for example the division of powers and functions between national legislatures and governments. So far there has been no comparative systematic analysis as to the impact of the EMW on national parliaments and the EU-legislature. By bringing together experts in the field from several member states and from the EU Commission this conference seeks to remedy this lacuna. The results of the conference will be published in a volume edited by the conference conveners.
