Global energy consumption is projected to triple from 2001 to 2100 reaching the milestone of 43 TW. Although recent analysis shows that fossil-fuel reserves could in principle be the supplier of such huge amount of energy, the Earth would face unsustainable CO2 emissions. In fact, carbon-free energy resources must compose a big portion of our energy-mix in order to guarantee a sustainable world growth. The implementation of electric vehicles is one of the promising solutions for this important social problem. However, there are many hurdles to be overcome related to the electrochemical energy storage requirements. In particular, most of the technologies rely on the development of stable Li metal electrodes. In this research proposal we will employ modern computational materials science approaches to design a thin membrane made of polymeric material that could cover and protect the lithium electrode. In practice, our study aims at solving quantum mechanics problems at the scale of atoms and electrons to answer very fundamental questions related to the interactions across the polymer-Li metal interface. Based on the acquired knowledge, we will also develop a high-throughput computational materials design approach to discover novel materials. The strengthening of theoretical works in this research field will also add value to the well-developed experimental expertise, improving the leadership of Sweden in this important strategic area of clean energy.
